There is no cost to using Second Life, but if you wish to buy anything within the world, you'll need some in-world money which are called Linden Dollars. With Linden Dollars, you can buy many different items.
Land
If you want to build your own content, you will also need the rights to build on land. This can be obtained by purchasing your own land (note that you need to be a Premium member prior to purchasing the land), or by gaining access to rights on land owned by other avatars. Land can be purchased through auction, or by purchasing private space which can be somewhat expensive. Land also carries a maintenance fee each month.
Penn State and CIC Research Group Content
Penn State has several islands within second life (an island is a private space with no neighbors). The CIC Research Group also has a plot of land within the Main Island.
